Union Ministers review development work in northeast

In order to speed up the process of development and ensure proper implementation of various schemes, several Union Ministers are visiting the northeast region to review development work.

In a bid to give boost to the textiles sector in Manipur, Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar inaugurated a number of mega projects during his visit to the state.

At a function at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, Gangwar along with Chief Minister Ibobi Singh laid down the foundation stone for a Power loom estate and an apparel and garment making center to be developed at Lamboi Khongnangkhong.

It will cater to the needs of weavers and entrepreneurs of the state.

He also launched a scheme to promote usage of geotechnical textiles and two sericulture schemes - Phase-II of Sericulture Project for Valley Districts of Manipur and Integrated Sericulture Development Project for Hill Districts of Manipur.

The new initiatives have been taken up under the North East Region Textile Promotion Scheme and will help in promoting the textiles industry, besides providing employment to a large number of people.

"Manipur was one of the first states that immediately gave us 1.5 acres land and today after inspecting it we are starting this program. The state must be lauded for this. As we informed you, in the 1st year we plan to spend Rs.18 crores on this and we won't let any financial constraints affect this project. We believe that in the next 1 year more than 1500 youth will get employment through all these centers. We are working together to make this possible," said Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar.

Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot and Minister of State Krishan Pal Gurjar were also on a two-day visit to the state to assess the condition of the differently-abled persons and review major programmes taken up by his ministry.

The ministers visited a differently-abled home run by Spastic Society, Manipur, at Ghari and interacted with the people and assured all possible assistance.

Later on, Gehlot distributed aids and assistive devices worth Rs. 50 lakh to more than 900 persons with disabilities in a function at the 1st Manipur Rifles Ground.

He announced that his ministry would sanction funds for various schemes and was ready to establish a 200-bedded composite regional centre as well as a drug rehabilitation centre, if the state government provided land for the same.

"If the Manipur Government wants, then our ministry is ready to give permission set up a 200-bedded hostel for SC, OBC, differently-abled and transgender category students here in Imphal. But for that we need the state government to provide us land. As soon as they give us the possession letter, we will give our approval within a month. We also want to set up a sports centre for differently-abled players," said Gehlot.

Earlier last week, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Prakash Javadekar was in Guwahati to attend the Chintan Shivir.

The forest officials from the northeast and eastern region came together at the event to discuss various problems regarding environment, forest and wildlife protection.

While Assam's Forest Minister Etwa Munda submitted a memorandum asking for additional funds for protecting sanctuaries, Javadekar announced that the Centre has established a Kaziranga Task Force that will include the youth living in the neighbouring villages of Kaziranga.

"Rhino poaching is a serious issue and the forest management is with the state government. The Central Government gives the requisite guidelines and the necessary guidelines. I visited Kaziranga twice and I had announced four programmes. One, we had established a Kaziranga task force. The report was submitted last week and now that the parliament session is over, we will look into it and announce the further measures," said Javadekar.

The Union Ministers have been visiting the northeastern states to review development work of their respective departments in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive to visit the region on a regular basis to ensure speedy implementation of the Centre's programmes.
