UP: To keep crime in check, village in Gorakhpur installs CCTV cameras

A village panchayat in Gorakhpur district in eastern Uttar Pradesh has installed CCTV cameras in the village to keep a check on incidents of crime including molestation in the area.

Perturbed over the increasing number of molestation and theft cases being reported in the area, the panchayat of Chhitauna village in Khorabar police station limits took the decision to install as many as 15 CCTV cameras, according to a panchayat official.

The main aim behind the installation is to get rid of such cases, said panchayat member Dinesh Yadav, adding that a dedicated monitoring room has been set up to monitor the cameras.

"Molestation and theft incidents have reduced after the installation of CCTV cameras in the village," he said.

Girls of the village seemed pleased with the move as they no longer face incidents of molestation and eve-teasing.

"We now have CCTV cameras installed in our village. I feel very happy as it has facilitated in the comings and goings, we can now go to school without any fear. This is indeed a good step," a young schoolgirl from the village said.

A local said: "We are very pleased that CCTV cameras have been installed in several places in our villages. We hope that with the installation of these cameras will put a check on the incidents of theft and other crimes in our village."

"It will act as a deterrent for people from outside who come to our village too to not indulge in such activities," he added.
