U.S. Ambassador to India, Nancy J. Powell, announced today that the United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing an additional $75,000 to a non-governmental organization to respond to the needs of the people affected by the disaster in the state of Uttarakhand.
She reiterated the United States' commitment to help those affected by the floods, and again offered her condolences on behalf of the American people to the families of those killed and rendered homeless.
Working in close collaboration with state and district authorities, Catholic Relief Services will use these funds to provide cash transfers and non-food relief supplies to the most severely affected families living in shelters and villages.
On June 23, Ambassador Powell had released $150,000 to Plan India and Save the Children India to provide emergency relief, including temporary shelter and other humanitarian assistance, to meet the immediate needs of families residing in remote areas of the state.
