United States Attorney General Eric Holder has reportedly announced his decision to step down from the post after leading the Justice Department for six years.

Describing him as a "people's lawyer," U.S. President Barack Obama praised his prosecution of terrorism suspects and his efforts to protect voting rights for minorities and equal rights for gays and lesbians among others, reported the BBC.

Holder is the first black U.S. Attorney General and has had the fourth longest tenure in the history of America.

He will remain in job until a successor is named and confirmed by the Senate.
