San Francisco based digital music company Rdio, has reportedly acquired the now defunct Indian streaming service Dhingana.

The acquisition is aimed at the local market in India, which loves music, but isn't always ready to pay for it.

According to PC World, Dhingana's catalog boasts of over a million songs in 42 languages and in Indian genres.

Rdio, founded by Janus Friis, a co-founder of Skype, aims to take advantage of Dhingana's portfolio and extend the user base to cover India's large number of smartphone users.

After the deal is complete, Dhingana's founders Snehal Shinde and Swapnil Shinde would join Rdio's executive team to focus on its expansion in India as well as other emerging markets.

Dhingana shut down its operations in February reportedly after a large Indian music label refused to renew its contract with the company.

The report said that Rdio India is scheduled to launch later this year.
