The US Naval research lab has reportedly created a rail gun that runs on electricity and shoots at seven times the speed of sound.

Explaining how the weapon works, Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, the Chief of Naval Research said that an electromagnetic rail gun is a gun that uses just electricity and no gun powder, and can shoot a projectile well over 100 miles at Mach 7.

According to CBS News, the Navy already has missiles that perform the same feats, but they cost millions of dollars each.

The weapon, which weighs 23 pounds, can pass through three reinforced concrete walls and costs about 25,000 dollars.

However, the rail gun will appear on warships only by the end of the decade and is being deployed for testing.
