The US is reportedly relying on a moderate rebel force with a strength of around 4,000 fighters to fight the Islamic State in Syria.

Syrian rebel unit Harakat Hazm has received sophisticated anti-tank missiles from the US and will head to Saudi Arabia soon for training, CBS News reports.

However, despite their alliance, the group's leader, Hamza al-Shamali, said that they had no prior knowledge of last week's air strikes.

He said that the group was shocked, adding that they should have been informed before the event now that they were allies.

Though Hazm has adequate weapons and training that is being provided to them by the US, the group is clearly outnumbered by the IS.

Critics of groups like Hazm complain that they are disorganized, and question their ability to fight both IS and the Assad regime - despite US support, the report said.
