The United States has sealed its seventh straight World Cup appearance with a 2-0 home qualifying win over Mexico on Tuesday, boosted by second-half goals from football stars Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan

The US needed a win or a tie from Honduras against Panama to clinch with two games to spare, and their dreams became true with a tie between Honduras and Panama.

According to CBS News, the US Soccer Federation picked Columbus Crew Stadium, which was the same venue during qualifiers Columbus in 2001, 2005 and 2009, for this year's match following wins over Mexico in the earlier games.

The report mentioned that after withstanding early Mexican pressure, US got the first breakthrough in the 49th minute when Johnson outjumped Mexican defender Diego Reyes to head the ball past goalkeeper Jesus Corona.

According to the report, despite suffering from conjunctivitis, Donovan increased his US-record goals total to 57 with his goal, the second in the game, in the 78th minute.

Following the win, the report stated that US (5-2-1) moved into first place in the North and Central American and Caribbean finals with 16 points, one ahead of Costa Rica (4-1-3), which was held to a 1-1 tie at last-place Jamaica and also clinched.
