The United States is reportedly spending more than USD nine million a day on the war against the Islamic State (IS), and has already shelled out USD 2.7 billion for the bombing campaign since it was started.

The figures, released by the Pentagon for the first time, show that two-thirds of the total expenditure had gone to the Air Force, reported the BBC.

The disclosure came as the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to impose a ban on further spending in the fight against IS. It approved a USD 579 billion defence spending bill.

The cost of the operation has risen sharply since it began last year.

The news came just days after the White House announced its decision to send 450 more U.S. troops to Iraq to train local forces, bringing the total count to 3,500.
