Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has backed his countryman and new United manager Louis van Gaal to 'do a Liverpool' with the Old Trafford side.

Deposed champions United are at a disadvantage this summer as they compete for quality stars with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal - all of whom can offer their targets Champions League football.

According to the Mirror, however, Van der Sar, who played under Van Gaal for Ajax and the Dutch national team, said that the Dutchman will spend the right money on the right player to ensure that they are right for United as he will know if they have the 'United DNA' of the club inside of them.

Van der Sar also warned European football's money-grabbers that his old boss will not allow them to take advantage of United's desperation to sign new faces to help them break back into the top four.

Van der Sar, now back at Ajax working as a marketing director, also said that United can get back from the seventh to the top position at the Premier League like Liverpool as they have more qualities than the Anfield side.

The former player also said that Van Gaal is going to be very clear about what he wants and what he demands from his players, adding that the coach can get inputs from his assistant Ryan Giggs and will know the feeling in the dressing room.
