Violence claims 12 lives in Karachi

At least 12 people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents of violence in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi over the last 24 hours despite the ongoing targeted operation by police and paramilitary troops in various areas of the city.

In the latest incident, a man was shot dead in downtown Nazimabad area of the city, Xinhua reports.

Police said that the victim was chairperson of a mosque community and investigation into his killings are being carried out.

In another incident, two people from an ethnic minority community were killed in firing by unknown gunmen at a rickshaw.

The attackers fled the scene after the incident and police said that the firing might be an outcome of personal enmity.

In a separate incident in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, two policemen were killed in firing by unknown gunmen at Haideri road of the city.

Earlier on Tuesday, seven people including two political workers and a fruit vendor were killed and several others were injured in separate incidents of firing.

Local paramilitary troops, Rangers, killed an alleged criminal and arrested several others in targeted operation against the target killers, extortionists and other criminals on Tuesday.

Rangers also apprehended seven alleged criminals affiliated with a banned outfit and seized a heavy quantity of arms and ammunition from their custody.

Meanwhile, Karachi police apprehended 148 alleged criminals, including 23 absconders, 40 others under Arms Ordinance, 22 under Narcotics Ordinance, four under Terrorism Act and three alleged extortionists on Tuesday.

Police started targeted operation to nab the criminals involved in street crimes, target killings, extortion and other crimes on the directives of the country's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
