India captain Virat Kohli has described his side's win over Sri Lanka in the three-match Test series as 'magnificent milestone' as they registered their first Test series win on Sri Lankan soil in 22 years on Tuesday.
The tourists clinched the series 2-1 after defeating Sri Lanka by 117 runs on the fifth day of the decisive third and final Test match at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
"Being 0-1 down is never easy. We have created a bit of history, credit to the whole squad, even to the guys who have not played - Bhuvneshwar, Aaron and even Harbhajan, who is such a senior member of the squad, but still kept helping the boys," a delighted Kohli said in a post-match ceremony.
The 26-year-old, who claimed his first full-fledged series win as captain, insisted that it was a collective effort, adding that they could be really proud of the way they have comeback in this series.
"It is a magnificent milestone for all of us and gain some confidence from here on. It has been a combined effort. It is never easy to win away from home. The kind of attitude and the character that the team has shown, I can be really proud of the boys," added Kohli.
Kohli also heaped praise on Man of the Match Cheteshwar Pujara for showing excellent temperament during his comeback match, where he smashed an unbeaten 145 in the first innings and became the fourth Indian batsman to carry the bat through the innings.
"Injuries do frustrate the team, but the attitude of the squad and the management was brilliant. If you take Pujara, he looked at this as an opportunity rather than a difficulty. That's the change of mindset we are going through right now," said Kohli.
Earlier, the three-match Test series was pegged at 1-1 after India claimed a 278-run win in the second match at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo. Sri Lanka won the opening Test match in Galle by 63 runs.
