Contrasting centuries from Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh helped Australia reach a dominating 438 for three at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies in Hobart on Thursday.

Opting to bat first, Australia made a brisk start as David Warner and Joe Burns (33) built a 75-run partnership for the opening wicket before the dismissal of the latter.

Warner was at his aggressive best as he scored a quick-fire 64 off 61 balls before West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican claimed two wickets in quick succession to put a brake on the run flow briefly.

Warrican removed Australian skipper Steve Smith for 10.

Subsequently, Voges and Marsh batted through the last two sessions in an unbeaten 317-run fourth-wicket stand.
