Australian cricketer Matthew Wade has said that his team planned to emulate David Warner's big scores against South Africa A in the three-day game against Sussex to stake a claim for a place in the squad for the third Ashes Test.
According to the Guardian, Warner's explosive 193 for Australia A in Pretoria on Wednesday has raised hopes for the players to don the baggy green at Old Trafford in the Sussex game, which was initially billed as a shootout between squad bowlers to secure a starting place in the third Test against England.
Reserve wicketkeeper Wade, who will be standing in for the rested first choice Brad Haddin, said that he believes that he has a chance of playing as a specialist batsman in the next Test if he can score runs against Sussex, adding that any other playing who scores a big hundred against Sussex like Warner has a chance to play in the Test.
Wade further said that the entire team was happy to see Warner scoring given the extreme pressure he has been under in the last couple of months, adding that he has set the bar high for the players to try and get a double hundred and beat him.
Wade, who is probably a better batsman than wicketkeeper, is the only Australian player other than the captain, Michael Clarke, to have made a Test century this year, against Sri Lanka in Sydney in January, the report added.
