Former Pakistani captain Waqar Younis, who had resigned as a coach of the Pakistan national team in 2011, has reportedly emerged as a strong candidate to be reappointed to the same position following some unimpressive performances under current coach Dav Whatmore.

Younis, who resigned as a coach due to personal reasons, had reportedly discussed his future plans with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

According to The Nation, a source claimed that neither the board nor most of the players want Whatmore to continue as head coach when his two-year contract expires in March 2014, adding that even Test and ODI captain Misbah-ul Haq had conveyed his feelings to the board and was in favour of having Younis back as coach.

The report said that the popularity of the former fast bowler became evident when some of the senior players including Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman praised him for his coaching skills, with Ajmal going to the extent of saying that there is no difference between Whatmore and a local coach, except in their salaries and languages.

According to Ajmal, Younis had worked well with the team and had stressed on their fitness, adding that he was very straightforward and let any player know when he was not performing or working hard enough.
