Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka fought off two set points in the critical third set to register a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 win over Spain's Tommy Robredo and advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open.
After splitting the first two sets, the third-seeded Swiss trailed 6-4 in the third-set tiebreaker but battled back to win 9-7 and closed out the victory over the Spanish 16th seed in the fourth set, Stuff.co.nz reported.
Wawrinka said that it was a really tough battle, adding that it is always tough to play against Robredo as he is always fighting.
Wawrinka, who showed his competitive fire with a dive into the stands during a point in the tight confines of Louis Armstrong Stadium, will next play Japans 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori, who battled hard to beat big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 4-6, in the quarterfinals, the report added.
