While it is often customary to wear formal attire at the workplace, a new study has claimed that wearing more casual clothes to the office can enhance an employee's standing among co-workers.

Francesca Gino, associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School carried out a number of experiments on 'nonconforming' behaviour and found that executives were more likely to think she had a higher work status when she gave a seminar wearing red sneakers with her suit than when she wore more formal footwear, Metro.co.uk reported.

The study also found that university students saw their professors as having a higher standing if they wore a T-shirt to work rather than a suit.

Meanwhile, the researchers said that comfort in the workplace is good, as it leads to better performance but it is important to strike a balance between casual and formal look.
