Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Kamal Farooqi on Tuesday asked why the Quran was being quoted by people without relevance, and especially with regard to the Maharashtra Government's ban on consumption of cow meat. He described it as sad and absurd.

"This is very sad that the Indian people are quoting the Quran without any relevance, reference and without authenticity. The person who has been quoting the Quran just to say that cow meat is banned is ridiculous and highly objectionable. They should refrain from this because they have no right interpret or misquote the Quran. The Quran has very clearly said what to eat and what not to eat 'what is haram what is halal'." Farooqi told ANI.

"As far as the Jain religion is concerned, I don't want to comment. We have complete respect for our Jain brothers and sisters, but they shouldn't impose this (ban) on us (Muslims)," he added.

The Maharashtra Government has banned the sale and consumption of cow meat in Mumbai for four days in view of the Jain festival of Paryushan.
