A woman skidding off a railway platform and was stuck between the platform and the train for almost 45 minutes, before succumbing to her injuries.
Police said overcrowding on the platform led to the mishap, and was not due to a security lapse by the railway authorities.
The woman has been identified as Poonam Gulati. She was getting off the Lucknow-Jhansi Intercity Express train at the Kanpur Railway Junction with her mother.
Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector Tripurari Pandey said there was a huge crowd that was trying hard to get inside the train, and in the tussle, Gulati slipped and got stuck on the railway track.
Those present at the accident site felt that there was no initiative taken by the railway officials to help the victim.
Around 15 million people travel every day by India's massive railway network. Cheaper carriages tend to be overcrowded, resulting in higher death tolls when accidents occur.
