National Commission for Women (NCW) member Nirmala Samant on Saturday condemned the rape of a 14-year old girl from Manipur, and demanded stern punishment for the culprit.

"The Women Commission is very sad about this incident. The accused is caught but he should be punished. North East is also a part of our country. This has to be stopped or a wrong message will be sent. We will be stressing the police to go for a stricter punishment,' she said.

All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) member Jagmathi Sangwan, echoing similar sentiments, condemned this incident and said that such discriminative mentality should not be encouraged.

"Such an incident happening with a minor girl is a sad thing. The accused have to be punished. They may look different from us but they are part of the country. We should not encourage this kind of discriminative mentality. We have to send a message that they are no different from the other people of the country by taking action immediately," she added.

A 14-year-old girl from Manipur was allegedly raped by her landlord's son in Delhi last night.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Barkha Singh said that one of the accused has been arrested.

"The status of the girl is much better now and she is out of danger," she added.

Earlier in the day, people from North East protested here against the brutal incident, demanding stern punishment to the perpetrators.

There was a scuffle between the police and the protestors who demanded justice for the fourteen year old girl.

"Just because our culture is a little different does not mean we are loose character. It is very sad that nobody even knows anything about the north east," said June Rose, one of the protestors.

"The girl was dragged into a pharmacy and was brutally raped. Even animals would not behave in such a way. The people of Delhi and India should be ashamed of themselves," said another protestor.
