Angry women , including a rape victim, staged a demonstration here today and demanded death penalty for rapists.
Sudha Dasgupta, a protester, demanded a strong anti-rape legislation that sets a fear in the hearts of offenders and make them refrain them from committing such heinous crime like rape. ". Rapists should realise that even they have mothers and sisters, whose sanctity is important being women. We are demanding death penalty for rapists", she said.
Yesterday, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, visited the family of a victim of rape and asked the courts to award severe punishment to the accused in the recent gang-rape and murder case of a 20 year old girl in Barasat, near here.
On June 7, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly abducted, gang-raped and murdered in Barasat.
Demanding immediate action in the case, protesters demanded a strong anti-rape legislation to deal with crimes against women.
So far seven people have been arrested and the Kolkata High Court has asked the state government to submit an affidavit on the progress made in investigations in the case .
