A self-help group in Manipur "Akhom Kouna Crafts" has been helping the local women in making a living by creating products by utilizing water reed. Women in the northeast have been taking up self-employment ventures to supplement their family incomes.
"Akhom Kouna Crafts" conducts training programs across the state, it was setup by Akhom Rasho Singh in 2003.
Akhom Memi Chanu, who is a manager in Akhom Kouna Crafts said, "Earlier, we used to face marketing problem. To promote our products, we had to participate at various exhibitions. Now, the handicraft department has recognized our water reed products. Our sale has improved a lot."
Self help groups like this one have come as a boon for unemployed women in Manipur who are now able to earn a living and support their families.
The women workers are happy to be able to earn a decent living and are keen to impart training to other unemployed youth.
Chanbi, who is an artisan said, "I utilize my extra time after studying to come at this centre and work."

Another artisan Naorem Ongbi Shanti Devi said, "It is very beneficial. I do not get myself engage in other work since I earn enough while working here."
"Akhom Kouna Crafts" also export some products to the United States.
Water Reed products like bags, cushions, mats, boxes, baskets and several other decorative items have become a special attraction in Manipur and rest of the country.
