US skiing champion and the girlfriend of Tiger Woods, Lindsey Vonn will reportedly give the 2014 Sochi Olympics a miss because of a right knee injury.
The defending downhill champion, who is the first American woman to win an Olympic gold in the downhill, tore two ligaments in her right knee during a high-speed crash at the world championships last February, sidelining her for about 10 months and then re-tore her surgically repaired anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a training crash in November, a key setback.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Vonn further sprained her Medial collateral ligament (MCL) during a race at Val d'Isere, France, last month after her comeback, following which she announced her decision on Facebook, exactly one month before the opening ceremony in Russia.
Stating that she is 'devastated' to miss the Olympics, Vonn said that she did everything possible to somehow get strong enough to overcome having no ACL, although the reality is that her knee is just too unstable to compete at this level, adding that she would be having surgery soon to be ready for the World Championships at home in Vail next February.
