The United States has said that it has "expedited" the delivery of weapons to the Saudi-led coalition fighting Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen.

On a visit to the Saudi capital city of Riyadh, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that Washington would also boost intelligence sharing with the coalition and set up a centre to coordinate with Saudi operations, the BBC reported.

He added that the move was aimed at backing Saudi Arabia and sending a strong message to the rebels and their allies that they cannot overrun Yemen by force.

Meanwhile, aid agencies have warned that a humanitarian crisis was looming large in the port city of Aden as clashes between rebels and government allied forces intensified.

About 550 people are said to have been killed in the clashes. According to a World Health Organization estimate, about 2,000 people have been injured in the last fortnight of fighting.

President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi was forced to flee Aden two weeks ago as the rebels advanced southwards from the capital city of Sanaa.

The Houthis want to overthrow the government, which they accuse of being corrupt.
