Yemen's Shia Houthi rebel movement confirmed that it has taken control of the government, and dissolved the parliament following the failure of United Nations-brokered peace talk.

The group, in a televised statement, stated that a five-member council would be installed and would act as the president for a provisional period, the BBC reported.

Earlier, the group had seized control of the capital Sanaa last September, which prompted President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to tender resignation in January.
