Young boys, girls learn self-defence techniques in Jorhat

With crimes against children rising, the demand to train them in self-defence techniques is growing. Recently, a week-long self-defence training camp was held in Assam's Jorhat city where many young boys and girls turned up with enthusiasm.

The week-long camp held at city's CKB College was organised by the All India Amateur Muay Thai Federation (AIAMTF).

The children were trained under the guidance of Rakesh Ayekpam Meetei, a master in Muay Thai or Thai boxing.

"Many boys and girls came to participate in this training camp. They are happy and satisfied with this training. They have learnt many things in this week. I taught them the basic of boxing, kicking, blocking, hold and release, throw and counter throw etc. I also taught them many other skills and techniques of martial arts," said AIAMTF's Principal, Rakesh Ayekpam Meetei

A group of students from AIAMTF also demonstrated "Ramoi waikru" technique of Muay Thai boxing during the camp.

"I have been learning here since 8 years old it has been a really good experience to learn here. I really feel safe because now I know the techniques how to save myself when other attack me so, I want all the girls to come and join this class because it will be very helpful for them," said a martial art student, Rakshekpam Meetei.

Another student Ranju Nath said that the training has boosted her confidence.

"I came here to join this self defense training. Due to this training, my self-confidence has developed a lot. This is highly essential for girls given the kind of environment these days. And I think every girl should get such kind of training which will boost their confidence," she said.

Many of them are also keen to take up martial arts as a career.
