Zoo authorities in Nagpur are making special arrangements to provide the animals a cool environment in the extreme summer.
Besides sprinkling water in the cages, coolers and table fans have been installed to help animals beat the heat.
"We have put around 10 coolers at different places, mainly for leopards, tigers and at birds' cages. Besides this, we have facilitated water at cages which are open. We have also made big water tanks, so that animals preferring to sit in the water can go there," said zoo in-charge, Sunil Bavaskar.
While leopards and tigers stayed inside the cages due to the rising temperature, many other animals and birds took shelter under the trees. For birds, the cages have been covered with green net, which helps reduce the heat considerably.
The authorities are also feeding plenty of liquids and seasonal fruits to the animals. They are also being fed water with minerals and vitamins to prevent dehydration.
In fact, the rising mercury has come as a disappointment to tourists as well.
The maximum temperature in the state hovered around 40 degree Celsius this week and is expected to rise in the coming months.
