German Ambassador Michael Steiner termed last evening's Zubin Mehta concert in Srinagar as 'historical', and said he was happy the concert went on smoothly amidst heightened security measures.

"This evening in historic Shalimar Bagh was unforgettable. The music

delighted that yesterday we could welcome 2,700 guests at Shalimar Bagh-far more than envisaged," he added .

The Kashmir Concert, organised by the German Embassy, saw Maestro Zubin Mehta conduct the Bavarian State Orchestra from Munich in a 90 minute musical tribute to the Kashmiris on the banks of Dal Lake.

Kashmir Police had arranged a multi-layered security arrangement to ensure safety of Zubin Mehta, his troupe and the audience.

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for a general strike in the region on Saturday, while a little-known militant group has threatened to attack the guests if the concert takes place.
