Generally Audi cars are badged by the engine options they offer. Uptil now, the company has been using the nomenclature as we have seen on the Volkswagen family cars. For instance, a 2.0-litre diesel engine gets the variant as 2.0 TDI, while a 2.0-litre petrol gets 2.0 FSI and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol gets a 2.0 TFSI badge. This is the same badging as we have seen across the Volkswagen family, be it the Skoda or the Volkswagen brand.

A Volkswagen Vento is a 1.6 MPI or a 1.6 TDI or a 1.2 TSI, while a Skoda Rapid too gets a similar badging. The Audi will now differentiate itself from the existing badging style. To begin with, it will retain the TDI, TFSI and the FSI badging that will denote the type of engine it has.

However, it will get a dynamic badging that will be a number that will be a multiple of 5. So, to begin with the new Audi A3 will have a 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine and a diesel engine will be 2.0-litre. The acceleration of the turbo petrol from 0-100km/hr is 7.8 seconds. The Newton’s second law of physics, which is v=u+at is used here. This helps to calculate the “a” factor, which is the acceleration. V is the final velocity, while u is the initial velocity. A is the acceleration and t is the time consumed.

V=u+at

Here, t= 7.6 seconds, u=0 km/hr and v=100km/hr= 27.78 m/s

So, 27.78= 0 + ax8.0

More From This Section

a= 3.56 x100/9.81 = 37.76

So, the closest multiple of five for 37.76 is 40. The 1.8-litre turbo petrol will have a badging of 40 TFSI, while the diesel will have 35 TDI. This higher the number, the better will be the acceleration of the vehicle. What we believe is that Audi will be introducing several tunings on the same engine and this will help them to reduce the engine manufacturing cost and yet offer more variants for the same engine block. At the moment, even the Audi Q3 S and the Q3 carry the same badge, however the Q3 quattro has more power than the Q3 S (which is about 140bhp). Beginning with the A3, all the Audis in India will get this new style of badging. If you think you need more clarity on this badging formula, do write to us and we shall try our best to solve your query.
