Following in the footsteps of the Duster, the Kwid has become the next big thing for Renault. Entering the budget hatchback space and succeeding in it is no easy task, considering the fact that the Kwid is up against the Maruti Alto. However, while the SUV-ish looks have attracted a lot of buyers, the Kwid doesn’t offer a 1.0-litre engine to rival the Alto K10.
The more powerful Kwid was also showcased at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. Here’s a quick look at what we can expect.
Engine and Transmission
Head-to-head, the current 0.8-litre engine in the Kwid produces more power (54PS) and torque (72Nm) than the Alto 800 (48PS / 69Nm). It is also lighter and has a better power/torque-to-weight ratio and offers a better fuel economy of 25.17kmpl (vs the Alto 800’s 24.7kmpl). Renault hasn’t revealed the specifications of the more powerful Kwid, but we can expect enough grunt to make it faster in the city and more capable on the highway as well. What’s more is that the Kwid 1.0-litre will also get an automated-manual gearbox (AMT) to make it more convenient to use in daily traffic.
Features
More From This Section
Like the current model, the more powerful Kwid will also get the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. However, the features we were hoping to see relate to safety. Unconfirmed reports state that the Kwid 1.0-litre will get dual front airbags and ABS. Currently, the Kwid is offered only with a driver side airbag in the top-end variant and even there, it’s an optional extra.
Looks
Changes vs the current Kwid will be minimal, but we do expect alloy wheels to be offered as an option. The AMT variant will get an “Easy-R” badge at the back, while spy shots show that the 1.0-litre Kwid will have an ‘SCe’ badge at the rear to denote the engine option.
Price
The Kwid 1.0-litre will be priced competitively and close to the Alto K10. Expect prices to range between Rs 3.55 lakh to Rs 4.45 lakh.
