India to Implement BS-VI Emission Norms by 2021

India has once again shown its commitment towards the changing climate and protection of environment. India was to implement BS (Bharat Stage) stage V norms from April 1, 2022 and BS stage VI norms from April 1, 2024 (as per the Auto Fuel Policy), but now according to the new announcement, it has advanced the implementation date for both the stages by three years for four-wheelers.

“Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued a draft notification for implementation of BS-V and BS-VI norms for the automobile sector, covering four wheeler category. The ministry has decided to advance date for implementation of the higher level emission standards,” read an official statement. “However the Minister of Road Transport & Highways is keen that the road transport sector should take a lead role in reducing the harmful effects of emissions on environment and climate change,” it added. Draft norms for two- and three-wheeler categories will also be notified shortly with advanced timeline similar to the four wheeler category.

As per the new dates now, the ministry intends to implement BS-V norms from April 1, 2019 and BS-VI norms by April 1, 2021. BS-VI norms focuses on reduction in NOx/4C levels. The announcement comes at a pivotal time when PM Narendra Modi is off to Paris to take part in “2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference”, starting from today, and India does not want to miss any shots as far as its role in climate change is concerned.
