The Mercedes-AMG GT is hardly a slow car, but the German automaker has decided to offer it in a meaner avatar anyway. Named the AMG GT R, the 2-door coupe has been spied testing on several occasions and it has just been teased, ahead of its debut on June 24.
Making its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the car is expected to be lighter than the standard model, offer more downforce and come equipped with a more potent engine. Only a handful of details could be seen in the teaser video, but visible differences on the exterior include the fixed rear-wing, vents on the bonnet and the ‘GT R’ badge at the rear. In the cabin, we see bucket seats and yellow contrast stitching on the interior trim, but not much else.
While Mercedes hasn’t disclosed any of the car’s technical details, we expect it to use the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine as the AMG GT S, but with raised output figures. The AMG GT S’s engine produces 510PS of power and 650Nm of torque. All that grunt is sent to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, helping the car achieve a top speed of 310 kmph (electronically limited) and a claimed 0 to 100 kmph time of 3.8 seconds.

With the GT R, expect the output and top speed numbers to go up, and acceleration time to go down. Components like the brakes, suspension and cooling system will also be upgraded to handle the added oomph of the GT R.
Currently, the AMG GT is available in the standard and S grades. In India, only the latter is available, with an asking price of Rs 2.40 crore, ex-showroom, Delhi.
