Mercedes-AMG’s second product after the SLS, the Mercedes-AMG GT, will be powered by a 4.0 Liter V8 Biturbo engine. As per the specifications revealed by the company, the new M178 engine will be a new generation V8 engine family from AMG and will continue to be fitted in future AMG models after the GT. The AMG 4.0 Liter V8 Biturbo engine belongs to the brand’s BlueDIRECT engine family being both efficient and economical with superior power and performance. The engine puts out a maximum output of 510 hp at 6250 rpm and 650 Nm of maximum torque at 1750-4750 rpm. The 3982cc engine carries a dry weight of 209 kg and is compliant to Euro 6 emissions standard.
The V8 engine features motorsport-inspired technology such as flow-optimized cylinder heads with zirconium alloy for maximum temperature and thermal conductivity. This translates into maximum performance of the engine, even in extreme conditions. While the forged pistons features lightweight design with high strength and a low-friction piston ring package, advanced valve assembly with cam followers and optimized valve springs, four-valve-per-cylinder design with twin overhead camshafts (DOHC) with camshaft adjustment on the inlet and outlet side enables excellent response and optimizes the gas cycle for each operating point. For minimal cylinder warpage and low oil consumption, “spectacle” honing is put to use.
The cylinder walls are lined with an nano-slide coating to help reduce friction losses while the crankcase is produced using sand casting technology and features a closed deck design which ensures extreme crankcase stability and enables high injection pressures. The front mid-engine uses dry sump lubrication technology, which does away with the conventional oil pan and moves the engine’s center of gravity closer to the road for better improvement for driving dynamics and high lateral acceleration. To keep the engine unit as compact as possible, the two turbo chargers are located inside the “Hot Inner” V8 engine block.
The new Mercedes-AMG GT will be unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show and we can expect a lot more details coming out as the launch gets nearer. Upon launch, the GT will go against the proven champion Porsche 911 and the latest sensation Jaguar F-Type. Here’s what Mr. Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH has to say about the GT, "The new Mercedes-AMG GT shows that we will be positioning AMG more vehemently and aggressively than to date as a dynamic sports car brand. The technological substance of the Mercedes-AMG GT underscores our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness. Following the global success of the SLS AMG, the new GT is the second sports car developed fully independently by Mercedes-AMG. An initial exclusive look at the design of the interior shows what is in store for our customers: a GT sports car in its purest form."
