Mercedes-Benz has refreshed its SLK roadster range by bringing-in some new engines, transmissions and advanced features on board, though the styling remains largely unchanged.

The turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in the entry-level SLK 200 has now been ditched in the favour of a bigger 2.0-litre turbo. While the change leads to 30Nm more toque at 300 Nm, the power output stands unaffected at 184 bhp.

The same 2.0-litre mill also makes its way under the bonnet of the SLK 300, which replaces the SLK 250. Here, the output from the same displacement increases by 40 bhp as compared to the preceding model, at 245 bhp, while the torque has increased by 60 Nm to 370 Nm.

A new six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard with the SLK200, whereas a new nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the old seven-speed auto, is being offered as an option in the SLK200 and standard in the SLK300. Named the ‘9G-Tronic,’ the transmission gets a newly designed sporty gearlever and steering wheel paddleshifters. And as per Mercedes, ‘the transmission allows very fast gear changes, especially in manual mode and lower engine speeds, and has a positive effect on efficiency, noise and comfort.’

Alongside these additions, ‘start-stop’ is also a standard feature on all the SLK models now, in a bid to meet the EU6 emissions standard. The advanced safety suite of the range has also been expanded and now includes Attention Assist, Distronic Plus with Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist as well.
