India’s best-selling sedan, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire has been recently spied with an automatic gearbox. One can easily spot the DDiS badging on the sides which confirms that this will be Maruti’s first diesel car with an automatic transmission.
Branded as Auto Gear Shift (AGS), the Dzire is most likely to have a Magneti Marelli sourced AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) autobox which has seen a lot of success in Maruti’s hatchbacks like the Celerio and Alto K10. Swift Dzire featured a CVT automatic gearbox which was just offered with the petrol variant.
Our market is seeing a paradigm shift towards automatic vehicles and introducing a diesel AMT in market seems to be a very good move from the Indian carmaker.
Top of the line ZDi variant has been spotted in the images which comes equipped with dual-airbags, ABS, bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted audio controls and automatic climate control.

Powering the automatic variant will be the tried and tested 1.3-litre Multijet four-valve DOHC turbo diesel engine that generates 74bhp of maximum power at 4000rpm and 190Nm of peak torque at 2,000rpm. We expect the AMT equipped variants to be launched in January 2016 and are most likely to be priced 30 to 50 thousand above their manual counterparts.
