The Volvo S60 Cross Country has been launched in the country at Rs. 38.9 lakh rupees (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Looking at the vehicle, one can imagine why Volvo chooses to call it the ‘most unique car in the world’. The idea of developing ‘cross’ versions isn’t limited to hatchbacks or estates any more. The friendly neighbourhood saloon has finally succumbed to the world’s fascination with anything remotely ‘SUV’.
The Cross Country is based on the standard S60 saloon. On the design front, the sedan ticks the essentials to flaunt a ‘cross’ badge. It gets the customary black cladding and the matte silver skidplates at either end to give it that rugged persona. Other aesthetic updates include larger 18" wheels and a honeycomb grille. The most noticeable difference, however, is the raised height. The ground clearance now stands at 201mm, which literally makes the S60 stand tall. The interiors are what you get on the top-spec S60. There’s absolutely no distinguishing the Cross from the standard saloon.
On the engine front, the Cross Country is powered by a 2.4-litre 5-cylinder diesel unit. The engine makes 190PS of power and 420Nm of torque. It also gets a Haldex AWD system that lets it tackle tricky terrain. The Cross Country functions as an FWD most of the time, with the power being split 95:5 (front:rear) when on the tarmac. Take it off the road and the AWD system can split the power in a 50:50 ratio as well.
