AUM of mutual fund industry declines 4.9% in December 2018

Net outflows stands at Rs 1.37 crore in December 2018

The Assets under Management (AUM) of the mutual fund (MF) industry declined by 4.9% (or by Rs 1.17 lakh crore) to Rs 22.86 lakh crore in December 2018 over November 2018. AUM of the industry grew by 7.5% rise (by Rs 1.59 lakh crore) in December 2018 compared with December 2017.

The m-o-m basis AUM of all categories witnessed rise except liquid and Fund of Funds Investing Overseas categories which witnessed fall. Liquid Funds saw highest dip in AUM in absolute terms and in percentage terms.

Net outflow in the industry stood at Rs 1.37 lakh crore in December 2018, against net inflows of Rs 1.42 lakh crore in November 2018 and net outflows of Rs 1.75 lakh crore in December 2017. The Liquid / Money Market Funds saw highest outflows, while other ETF Funds registered highest inflows.

AUM of equity funds increased 1.6% (by Rs 11699 crore) to Rs 7.56 lakh crore in December 2018 over November 2018. The assets of equity-linked saving schemes (ELSS) increased by 1.8% (by Rs 1593 crore) to Rs 88152 crore.

Equity Funds registered a net inflow of Rs 3601 crore for the month and ELSS Funds saw net inflow to a tune of Rs 841 crore in December 2018. Net inflows in equity funds totaled to Rs 82879 crore and net inflows in ELSS totaled to Rs 7611 crore in April-December 2018.

AUM of Liquid Funds dipped 24.8% (by Rs 147317 crore) to Rs 4.46 lakh crore end December 2018 over November 2018, primarily due to net outflows of Rs 148906 crore. Inflows into the category are cyclical in nature as companies, banks and financial institutions withdraw money in the quarter for paying advance taxes and plough back the money after quarter end. Net inflows totaled to Rs 93308 crore in April-December 2018.

AUM of Income Funds rose by 0.3% (by Rs 2309 crore) to Rs 6.92 lakh crore end December 2018 over November 2018. Moreover, this category witnessed net outflows of Rs 3407 crore. Net outflows in income funds totaled to Rs 132847 crore in April-December 2018.

Other Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) has witnessed net inflow of Rs 10878 crore in December 2018, in addition to net inflows of Rs 1634 crore in November 2018. The total AUM of Other ETFs increased by Rs 12500 crore or by 13.2% to Rs 107363 crore on monthly basis, and increased by Rs 37010 crore when compared with same month of the previous year.

The total AUM of Fund of Funds Investing Overseas decreased by Rs 65 crore or by 3.8% to Rs 1634 crore on sequential basis. Net inflows from this category totaled to Rs 213 crore in April-December 2018.

AUM of Gold ETF increased by 4.2% (by Rs 186 crore) to Rs 4571 crore end December 2018. On y-o-y basis, assets of this category declined by 5.8%. The category witnessed outflows to a tune of Rs 25 crore in December 2018. Net outflows from Gold ETF totaled to Rs 305 crore in April-December 2018.

AUM of Gilt Funds moved up by 1.8% (by Rs 141 crore) to Rs 8143 crore as on December 2018, while the category reported net inflows of Rs 6 crore in December 2018. Net outflows in gilt funds totaled to Rs 3241 crore in April-December 2018.

Assets of Balanced funds increased by 1.0% (by Rs 1709 crore) in November to Rs 1.79 lakh crore when compared on sequential basis. Net inflows in this category totaled to Rs 12075 crore in April-December 2018.
