Broad market depicts strength

Key benchmark indices further extended gains and hit fresh intraday high in mid-morning trade as firmness in Asian stocks boosted sentiment. At 11:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 244.05 points or 0.94% at 26,104.22. The gains of the Nifty 50 index were higher than the Sensex's gains in percentage terms. The Nifty was currently up 90 points or 1.13% at 8,055.60. The Sensex was currently hovering above the psychological 26,000 mark after regaining that mark earlier in the day. The Nifty was hovering above the psychological 8,000 level after reclaiming that mark earlier in the day.

The broad market depicted strength. There were more than three gainers against every loser on BSE. 1,676 shares rose and 475 shares fell. A total of 140 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was currently up 0.92%, underperforming the Sensex. The BSE Small-Cap index was currently up 1.56%, outperforming the Sensex.

The Sensex gained 263.97 points or 1.02% at the day's high of 26,124.14 in mid-morning trade, its highest level since 23 November 2016. The barometer index rose 14.28 points or 0.05% at the day's low of 25,874.45 in early trade. The Nifty gained 95.65 points or 1.2% at the day's high of 8,061.15 in mid-morning trade, its highest level since 21 November 2016. The index rose 11.25 points or 0.14% at the day's low of 7,976.75 in early trade.

In overseas stock markets, Asian stocks gained as the Thanksgiving break in the United States pegged the dollar's relentless surge that had sucked capital out of most emerging markets. US markets remained closed yesterday, 24 November 2016, on Thanksgiving holiday and trading will end early today, 25 November 2016 there.

Shares of power generation and power distribution companies gained. NTPC (up 2.07%), NHPC (up 2.08%), Tata Power Company (up 0.94%), Adani Power (up 0.83%), Power Grid Corporation of India (up 1.59%), and Reliance Infrastructure (up 0.92%) gained. Reliance Power (down 0.39%) and Torrent Power (down 0.18%) declined.

Shares of state run coal mining major Coal India rose 0.22%.

Capital goods stocks were mixed. Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) (up 1.29%), ABB India (up 0.78%), Bharat Electronics (up 1.02%), and Siemens (up 1.39%) gained. Havells India (down 1.49%), L&T (down 0.09%), and Thermax (down 0.58%) declined.

Talwalkars Better Value Fitness rose 3.59% after the company's board of directors approved the demerger of gym business into separate company. The announcement was made after market hours yesterday, 24 November 2016. Talwalkars Better Value Fitness said that in order to achieve better management and to have clear focus on business operations, the management of the company has decided to demerge gym business, thereby transferring gym business of Talwalkars Better Value Fitness to Talwalkars Lifestyles, in the interests of maximizing overall shareholder value. The gym business offers a diverse suite of services including gyms, spas, aerobics, yoga and health counseling under the brand Talwalkars. As on 31 March 2016, the gym business had 176 fitness centers in 85 cities across India and Sri Lanka serving over 1.68 lakh members. The turnover of gym business stood at Rs 197.61 crore or 86.21% of total business of Talwalkars Better Value Fitness in the latest financial year.

Jagran Prakashan rose 2.51% after the company announced that board of directors of the company's subsidiary, Music Broadcast (MBL), approved an initial public offer (IPO). The IPO will comprise a fresh issue of upto Rs 400 crore and an offer for sale by existing shareholders. MBL has sent a letter of transmittal to its shareholders seeking their participation in the offer for sale for the sale portion of the IPO. The announcement was made after market hours yesterday, 24 November 2016.

Sunil Hitech Engineers hit 5% upper circuit at Rs 174.75 after the company announced that it had fixed 3 December 2016 as the record date for 10-for-1 stock split and 1:1 bonus shares. The announcement was made after market hours yesterday, 24 November 2016.
