Capital goods shares slip as capital goods production plummets in October

Crompton Greaves (down 2.46%), ABB (down 1.83%), Punj Lloyd (down 1.79%), Lakshmi Machine Works (down 1.58%), Siemens (down 1.41%), BEML (down 1.39%), SKF India (down 1.33%), Areva T&D India (down 1.10%), Larsen & Toubro (down 1.06%), Praj Industries (down 0.93%), Suzlon Energy (down 0.89%), Alstom Projects (down 0.88%), Usha Martin (down 0.88%), BGR Energy Systems (down 0.84%), Bharat Electronics (down 0.21%) and Bhel (down 0.06%), edged lower.

The BSE Capital Goods index was down 0.90% at 9,310.55. It underperformed the Sensex, which was down 0.34% at 16,157.85.

The BSE Capital Goods index had underperformed the market over the past one month until 9 December 2011, falling 13.51% compared with the Sensex's 6.62% decline. The index had also underperformed the market in past one quarter, sliding 24.45% as against 3.87% fall in the Sensex.

India's industrial output contracted 5.1% in October 2011 from a year earlier, government data showed today, 12 December 2011. Manufacturing output, which constitutes about 76% of the industrial production, fell an annual 6%, the statistics office said in a statement today.
