Core inflation rises to 4.8% in February 2016 from 4.5% in January 2016
The all-India general CPI inflation dipped to four months low of 5.18% in February 2016 (new base 2012=100), while snapping consistent increase for last six straight months. The CPI inflation had stood at 5.69% in January 2016. The corresponding provisional inflation rate for rural area was 5.97% and urban area 4.30% in February 2016 as against 6.48% and 4.81% in January 2016. However, the core CPI inflation rose to 4.77% in February 2016 from 4.50% in January 2016.The cumulative CPI inflation eased to 4.91% in April-February 2016 compared with 5.99% in April-February 2015.
Among the CPI components, inflation of food and beverages declined to 5.52% in February 2016 from 6.66% in January 2016 contributing to the dip in CPI inflation. Within the food items, the inflation plunged for vegetables to 0.70%, pulses and products 38.30%, oils and fats 5.13%, meat and fish 7.27%, milk and products 3.66% and fruits to -0.72%. The inflation was flat for non-alcoholic beverages at 4.24% and cereals and products 2.18%. On the other hand, inflation rose for egg to 6.19%, and sugar and confectionery 0.51% in February 2016.
The inflation for housing increased to 5.33%, while that for miscellaneous items moved up to 4.38% in February 2016. Within the miscellaneous items, the inflation for transport and communication rose to 2.39%, and personal care and effects 4.77% in February 2016.
The inflation for clothing and footwear declined to 5.52% in February 2016, while the CPI inflation of fuel and light also eased to 4.59% in February 2016.
