CPI inflation rises to 4.4% in September 2015

Vegetable inflation jumps mainly contributing CPI inflation rise in September 2015

The all-India general CPI inflation increased to 4.4% in September 2015 (new base 2012=100), compared with 3.7% reading in August 2015. The corresponding provisional inflation rate for rural area was 5% and urban area 3.6% in September 2015 as against 4.5% and 2.8% in August 2015. The core CPI inflation rose to 4.1% in September 2015 from 3.9% in August 2015. The cumulative CPI inflation eased to 4.5% in April-September 2015 compared with 4.2% in April-September 2014.

Among the CPI components, the inflation for food and beverages rose to 4.3% in September 2015 from 2.9% in August 2015 mainly contributing to the rise in CPI inflation. Within the food items, the inflation moved up for vegetables to 0%, pulses & products 29.8%, cereals & products 1.4%, spices 9.3%, and oils & fats 3.6%. On the other hand, inflation eased for milk & products to 5.1%, and prepared meals, snacks, sweets etc. to 7.1% in September 2015.

The inflation of the pan, tobacco & intoxicants group was flat at 9.4%, while inflation for clothing and footwear rose to 6% in September 2015. The inflation for miscellaneous items increased to 3.3% in September 2015 from 3.1% in August 2015, driven by rise in inflation for transport & communication to (-) 0.6%, health 5.5% and personal care 3.6% in September 2015.

However, the housing inflation rose to 4.7%, while the CPI inflation for fuel and light also moved down to 5.4% in September 2015.
