India's reservoir water storage at 57% of full capacity as on 13 December

Water storage moderates from 59% as on 06 December

The water storage available in 91 major reservoirs of the country for the week ending on 13 December 2018 stood at 92.387 billion cubic meters (bcm), which is 57% of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. This shows a decline in reservoir water storage from 59% for the week ending on 06 December 2018. The level of water storage in the week ending on 13 December 2018 was 98% of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 94% of storage of average of last ten years.

The total storage capacity of these 91 reservoirs is 161.993 bcm which is about 63% of the total storage capacity of 257.812 bcm which is estimated to have been created in the country. About 37 Reservoirs out of these 91 have hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW.

The total live storage available in reservoirs of northern region is 13.55 bcm, which is 75% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was lower at 61% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was also lower at 62% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.

The total live storage available in reservoirs of eastern region is 12.35 bcm, which is 66% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

The total live storage available in reservoirs of western region is 13.42 bcm which is 43% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during current year is less than the storage of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

The total live storage available in reservoirs of central region is 27.01 bcm which is 64% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during current year is better than the storage of last year and is also better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

The total live storage available in reservoirs of southern region is 26.07 bcm which is 51% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

States having better storage than last year for corresponding period are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. States having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period are Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, AP&TG (Two combined projects in both states), Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
