After hovering near the flat line in mid-morning trade, key benchmark indices slipped into negative zone in early afternoon trade. At 12:15 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex lost 59.75 points or 0.19% at 31,464.93. The Nifty 50 index fell 8 points or 0.08% at 9,829.40. Market sentiment was subdued amid lackluster trading in Asian bourses and weaker closing on the Wall Street last Friday.
Key indices opened the session higher and traded with small gains till morning trade. Later, the indices hovered near the flat line in mid-morning trade.
The Sensex lost 89.37 points or 0.28% at the day's low of 31,435.31 in early afternoon trade. It rose 117.13 points or 0.37% at the day's high of 31,641.81 in morning trade. The Nifty lost 17.70 points or 0.17% at the day's low of 9,819.70 in early afternoon trade. It rose 46.95 points or 0.47% at the day's high of 9,884.35 in morning trade, its highest level since 17 August 2017.
Among secondary indices, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index lost 0.21%. The decline in this index was higher than the Sensex's fall in percentage terms. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 0.07%. The decline in this index was lower than the Sensex's fall in percentage terms.
The breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, turned negative from positive. On the BSE, 1,205 shares declined and 1,125 shares rose. A total of 131 shares were unchanged.
Realty stocks were mostly lower. Prestige Estates Projects (down 2.59%), Indiabulls Real Estate (down 1.5%), DLF (down 1.14%), Oberoi Realty (down 0.86%) and Godrej Properties (down 0.16%) declined. Unitech (up 2.52%), Sobha (up 2.23%), HDIL (up 0.67%) and D B Realty (up 0.14%) gained.
Auto stocks were mixed. Tata Motors (down 0.92%), Bajaj Auto (down 0.81%) and Maruti Suzuki India (down 0.58%) declined. Eicher Motors (up 1.01%), Hero MotoCorp (up 0.56%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (up 0.57%) edged higher.

US equities closed off their session lows on Friday, 18 August 2017 after Steve Bannon, one of President Donald Trump's top advisors, left the administration. Reports suggested that tension between Bannon and other top advisors to Trump, including Chief Economic Advisor Gary Cohn and National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, had been festering inside the White House.
