Market drifts lower in early trade on negative Asian stocks

Key benchmark edged lower in early trade on negative Asian stocks. At 9:24 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 78.22 points or 0.31% at 25,252.27. The 50-unit Nifty 50 index was currently down 18 points or 0.23% at 7,696.90.

The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 621 shares rose and 479 shares fell. A total of 42 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was currently up 0.03%. The BSE Small-Cap index was currently up 0.19%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

In overseas markets, Asian stocks were trading mostly lower following lackluster cues overnight from US markets and geopolitical concerns following the deadly terror attacks in Brussels yesterday, 22 March 2016. US stocks closed mixed yesterday, 22 March 2016 as a decline in financial and consumer-staples shares weighed on the main benchmarks.

Tata Steel (up 0.97%), Hero MotoCorp (up 0.71%) and ONGC (up 0.69%) edged higher from the Sensex pack.

Telecom stocks rose. Bharti Airtel (up 0.83%), Idea Cellular (up 0.24%), and Reliance Communications (up 0.48%) rose. Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) shed 0.15%. MTNL was trading unchanged at Rs 17.55.
