Mineral Production 2.1% higher during July 2014 over July 2013

The index of mineral production of mining and quarrying sector for the month of July (new Series 2004-05=100) 2014 at 118.5, was 2.1% higher as compared to July 2013. The cumulative growth for the period April- July 2014-15 over the corresponding period of previous year stands at (+) 2.8%.

The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during July 2014 was Rs. 17279 crore. The contribution of: Petroleum (crude) was the highest at Rs. 5746 crore (33%). Next in the order of importance were: coal Rs. 5403 crore, iron ore Rs. 2842 crore, natural gas (utilized) Rs. 1696 crore, lignite Rs. 351 crore and limestone Rs. 395 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95% of the total value of mineral production in July 2014.

Production level of important minerals in July 2014 were: coal 423 lakh tonnes, lignite 31 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilized) 2650 million cu. m., petroleum (crude) 31 lakh tonnes, bauxite 1664 thousand tonnes, chromite 110 thousand tonnes, copper conc. 9 thousand tonnes, gold 111 kg., iron ore 126 lakh tonnes, lead conc. 16 thousand tonnes, manganese ore 192 thousand tonnes, zinc conc. 123 thousand tonnes, apatite & phosphorite 128 thousand tonnes, dolomite 561 thousand tonnes, limestone 222 lakh tonnes, magnesite 24 thousand tonnes and diamond 3763 carat.

The production of important minerals showing positive growth during July 2014 over July 2013 include 'magnesite' (62.8%), 'diamond'(61.0%), 'apatite & phosphorite' (36.0%), 'lignite' (22.7 %), 'iron ore'(16.8%), 'manganese ore'(-14.6%), 'gold' (14.4%), 'coal' (6.6%), and 'dolomite' (1.1%). The production of other important minerals showing negative growth are: 'petroleum (crude)' [(-) 1.0%], 'limestone' [(-)4.2%], lead conc.' [(-)7.0%], 'natural gas (utilized)' [(-)9.2%]' bauxite [(-) 9.6%], zinc conc.' [(-) 10.7%], 'copper conc.' [(-)15.3%], and 'chromite.' [(-) 45.2%].
