Positive market breadth

Key benchmark indices hovered in positive terrain within a narrow range in mid-morning trade. Gains were small. At 11:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 63.84 points or 0.23% at 28,358.12. The Nifty 50 index was currently up 22.85 points or 0.26% at 8,745.90.

In overseas stock markets, Asian stocks were mixed after the first US presidential debate between Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump. Democrat Hillary Clinton accused Republican Donald Trump of racism, sexism and tax avoidance late yesterday, 26 September 2016 in US during a heated presidential debate. Trump, a real estate tycoon making his first run for public office, said Clinton's long years of service represented bad experience with few results and suggested her trade deal with Asian countries was insincere.

US stocks extended losses yesterday, 26 September 2016 as worries about Germany's Deutsche Bank weighed on the financial sector and as investors awaited the US presidential debate. US presidential elections will be held on 8 November this year.

Closer home, the market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 1,317 shares rose and 906 shares fell. A total of 172 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was currently up 0.28%. The BSE Small-Cap index was currently up 0.61%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

Capital goods stocks were mixed. BEML (up 0.04%), Havells India (up 0.81%), Thermax (up 3.75%), Crompton Greaves (up 0.44%) and Siemens (up 0.48%) gained. ABB (India) (down 0.21%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) (down 0.74%) and L&T (down 0.75%) declined.

IT stocks advanced. Tech Mahindra (up 0.97%), HCL Technologies (up 0.08%), TCS (up 1.34%), Infosys (up 1.06%), and Wipro (up 0.48%) edged higher.
