Key benchmark indices extended losses after a sudden slide in morning trade, with the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, falling below the psychologically important 28,000 mark. At 10:15 IST, the Sensex was down 157.88 points or 0.56% at 27,927.28. The Nifty 50 index was currently down 57.35 points or 0.66% at 8,620.90.
The Sensex rose 58.12 points or 0.21% at the day's high of 28,143.28 at onset of trading session. The barometer index lost 168.05 points or 0.6% at the day's low of 27,917.11 in morning trade, its lowest level since 5 August 2016. The Nifty rose 11.85 points or 0.14% at the day's high of 8,690.10 at onset of trading session. The index fell 57.35 points or 0.66% at the day's low of 8,619.25 in morning trade, its lowest level since 5 August 2016.
The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market turned negative from positive in morning trade. On BSE, 957 shares fell and 903 shares rose. A total of 88 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was currently off 0.42%. The BSE Small-Cap index was currently off 0.24%. The fall in both these indices was lower than the Sensex's decline in percentage terms.
In overseas stock markets, Asian stocks witnessed a mixed trend. US stocks eked out small gains yesterday, 9 August 2016, with the Nasdaq Composite index posting a fresh record close, as investors kept an eye on falling oil prices.
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) lost 1.17% to Rs 1,017.80. The stock hit a high of Rs 1,034.50 and low of Rs 1,015 so far during the day.
Metal and mining stocks rose. Hindustan Zinc (up 1.95%), Jindal Steel & Power (up 0.79%), Hindalco Industries (up 1.26%), NMDC (up 0.45%), Vedanta (up 0.51%), Tata Steel (up 0.55%), Steel Authority of India (Sail) (up 0.11%), National Aluminium Company (up 0.51%) rose.

JSW Steel (down 0.24%) and Hindustan Copper (down 0.08%) edged lower.
Copper edged higher in the global commodities market. High Grade Copper for September 2016 delivery was currently up 0.42% at $2.159 per pound on the COMEX.
FMCG stocks fell. Britannia Industries (down 1.36%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) (down 0.49%), Godrej Consumer Products (down 0.33%), Hindustan Unilever (down 0.31%), Marico (down 0.66%), Nestle India (down 0.4%), Tata Global Beverages (down 1.85%), Jyothy Laboratories (down 0.33%) declined.
Dabur India (up 1.26%), GlaxoSmithkline Consumer Healthcare (up 0.11%), Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care (up 1.16%) and Bajaj Corp (up 0.17%) rose.
