Sensex, Nifty attain record closing high before election outcome

Key benchmark indices edged higher in choppy trade on the eve of the outcome of Lok Sabha elections amid expectations that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will win a majority in the election which concluded on Monday, 12 May 2014. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, and the 50-unit CNX Nifty, both, attained record closing high. The market sentiment was boosted by data showing that foreign funds made heavy purchases of Indian stocks during the preceding two trading sessions. Investor sentiment was also boosted by the latest data showing that inflation based on monthly wholesale price index eased to 5.2% in April 2014 from 5.7% in March 2014. The Sensex garnered 90.48 points or 0.38%, up 162.85 points from the day's low and off 66.18 points from the day's high.

The Sensex has risen 1,487.80 points or 6.63% in this month so far (till 15 May 2014). The Sensex has gained 2,734.92 points or 12.91% in calendar year 2014 so far (till 15 May 2014). From a 52-week low of 17,448.71 on 28 August 2013, the Sensex has risen 6,456.89 points or 37%. The Sensex is off 163.34 points or 0.67% from record high of 24,068.94 hit on Tuesday, 13 May 2014.

Coming back to today's trade, Bajaj Auto dropped after the company reported weak Q4 results. Shares of Maruti Suzuki India scaled record high. Tata Steel edged higher in volatile trade after the company announced turnaround Q4 results. Most capital goods stocks declined. Asian Paints dropped, with the stock reversing direction after scaling record high at the onset of the trading session

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market was weak.

Indian stocks witnessed high intraday volatility today, 15 May 2014. Key benchmark indices trimmed initial gains in morning trade. While the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, retained positive zone in mid-morning trade, the 50-unit CNX Nifty slipped into the red. Key benchmark indices hovered in negative zone in early afternoon trade. Volatility ruled the roost as the key benchmark indices regained positive zone in afternoon trade after data released by the government showed that inflation based on monthly wholesale price index eased to 5.2 in April 2014 from 5.7% in March 2014. Intraday volatility continued as key benchmark indices alternately swung between positive and negative zone in mid-afternoon trade.

The market sentiment was boosted by data showing that foreign funds made heavy purchases of Indian stocks during the preceding two trading sessions. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 3654.40 crore from the secondary equity markets during the preceding two trading sessions on Tuesday, 13 May 2014, and Wednesday, 14 May 2014, as per data from the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi).

Indian stocks may see high intraday volatility tomorrow, 16 May 2014, as trends and actual results of wins by candidates/parties are announced during the process of counting of votes for the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The counting of votes will begin at 8:00 IST tomorrow, 16 May 2014, and results are expected by tomorrow itself. Investors are hoping that when the results of the Lok Sabha elections are out tomorrow, 16 May 2014, a stable government which will complete its full term of five years in office comes to power. A party or a pre-poll alliance will need 272 MPs to form government at the Centre, which is a simple majority in 543-member Lok Sabha. Investors are expecting measures for revival of the economy, business-friendly policies and good governance from the new government that comes to power after the elections. Investors expect policy measures from the new government to put India on a high-growth path on a sustainable basis.

The BJP in its Lok Sabha polls manifesto has promised more business-friendly policies if the party comes to power after elections. The BJP has said that measures for the revival of the economy are its priority if the party comes to power after elections. India's GDP growth has slowed to a decade low of below 5%. The GDP grew 4.7% in Q3 December 2013.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan today, 15 May 2014, said that the RBI has discussed contingency plans with the finance ministry and the stock market regulator Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to deal with any excessive volatility from election results to be unveiled tomorrow, 15 May 2014. The RBI will also be ready to deal with any volatility in the rupee, Rajan said during a news briefing after the RBI's board meeting in Shimla.

The S&P BSE Sensex garnered 90.48 points or 0.38% to settle at 23,905.60, a record closing high for the barometer index. The index jumped 156.66 points at the day's high of 23,971.78 in early trade, its highest level since 13 May 2014. The index shed 72.37 points at the day's low of 23,742.75 in early afternoon trade, its lowest level since 13 May 2014.

The CNX Nifty garnered 14.40 points or 0.2% to settle at 7,123.15, a record closing high for the index. The index hit a high of 7,152.55 in intraday trade, its highest level since 13 May 2014. The index hit a low of 7,082.55 in intraday trade.

The BSE Mid-Cap index lost 64 points or 0.83% to settle at 7,640.10. The BSE Small-Cap index shed 67.91 points or 0.86% to settle at 7,791.12. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.

The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 3206 crore, lower than Rs 3547.55 crore on Wednesday, 14 May 2014.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market was weak. On BSE, 1,743 shares dropped and 1,156 shares rose. A total of 136 shares were unchanged.

The S&P BSE Consumer Durables index (up 1.52%), the S&P BSE Power index (up 0.97%) and the S&P BSE Oil & Gas index (up 0.95%) outperformed the Sensex.

The S&P BSE FMCG index (up 0.29%), the S&P BSE Bankex (up 0.14%), the S&P BSE IT index (down 0.31%), the S&P BSE Healthcare index (down 0.39%), the S&P BSE Auto index (down 0.46%), the S&P BSE Teck index (down 0.49%), the S&P BSE Metal index (down 0.71%), the S&P BSE Capital Goods index (down 0.9%) and the S&P BSE Realty index (down 1.11%) underperformed the Sensex.

Among the 30-share Sensex pack, 18 stocks gained and rest of them declined. Tata Power Company (up 2.65%), Hindustan Unilever (up 1.85%) and ONGC (up 2.82%) edged higher from the Sensex pack.

Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) rose 1.14% to Rs 1,057.50. The stock hit a high of Rs 1,058.85 and a low of Rs 1,040.

GAIL (India) rose 2.55% to Rs 405.50 after hitting 52-week high of Rs 407.30 in intraday trade.

NTPC gained 2.35% ahead of its Q4 results today, 15 May 2014.

Index heavyweight and cigarette major ITC was up 0.4% at Rs 367.10. The stock hit high of Rs 369.40 and low of Rs 364.45.

Nestle India fell 1.39%. The stock turned ex-dividend today, 15 May 2014, for total dividend of Rs 25 per share. Of this, Rs 12.50 per share interim dividend is for year ended 31 December 2014 and final dividend of Rs 12.50 per share for the year ended 31 December 2013.

Asian Paints lost 5.5% to Rs 526.30, with the stock reversing direction after scaling record high of Rs 565 at the onset of the trading session. The stock hit low of Rs 524.45.

Asian Paints reported 14.45% rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 287.42 crore on 21.5% rise in total income to Rs 3338.19 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The company's consolidated net profit rose 9.4% to Rs 1218.81 crore on 16.2% rise in total income to Rs 12849.03 crore in the year ended 31 March 2014 over the year ended 31 March 2013. The Q4 result was announced after market hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014.

Asian Paints said that the results for the quarter and twelve months ended 31 March 2014 include consolidated financials of Sleek International in which the company acquired 51% stake on 8 August 2013. In view of this, the results for the quarter and twelve months ended 31 March 2014 are not comparable with the corresponding previous periods, the company said.

Asian Paints said that the Board of Directors of the company at its meeting held Wednesday, 14 May 2014, approved the reappointment of Shri K B S Anand as Managing Director & CEO of the company for a further period of three years with effect from 1 April 2015 i.e. for the period 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2018. The re-appointment will be subject to approval by the shareholders of the company at the ensuing Annual General Meeting.

Asian Paints said at the fag end of trading session on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, that the company has entered into a binding agreement with Ess Ess Bathroom Products (Ess Ess) and its promoters to acquire its entire front end sales business including brands, network and sales infrastructure, subject to satisfaction of certain conditions precedents and applicable statutory approvals. Ess Ess is a prominent player in the bath and wash business segment in India and has high quality products in this segment.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries rose 1.85% after the company announced before market hours today, 15 May 2014, that one of its subsidiaries has executed a settlement agreement with Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation stipulating a dismissal of the lawsuits filed in the United States against the company regarding submission of an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for a generic version of Gleevec, Imatinib Mesylate tablets. These tablets are indicated for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Sun Pharma's subsidiary may launch its version of generic Gleevec in the United States on 1 February 2016. The other terms of the agreement are confidential. The agreement is subject to customary regulatory approvals. Sun Pharma's subsidiary holds a tentative approval from the US FDA for its ANDA for a generic version of Gleevec. As per IMS Health data, Gleevec had annual sales of approximately $2 billion in the United States.

Separately, with reference to the news item appearing in the newspaper on 14 May 2014 titled "Sun Pharma moves Supreme Court against stay on Ranbaxy merger", Sun Pharmaceutical Industries clarified after market hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, that the facts mentioned under the referred news article are largely true. The company further stated that there is no material impact of the matter on the process of completion of merger of Ranbaxy Laboratories with the company. Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy had announced on 7 April 2014 that they have entered into definitive agreements pursuant to which Sun Pharma will acquire 100% of Ranbaxy in an all-stock transaction.

Metal and mining stocks edged lower. Among steel stocks, JSW Steel (down 1.65%) and Jindal Steel & Power (down 2.26%) declined.

Steel Authority of India (Sail) rose 0.73% to Rs 75.55 after hitting 52-week high of Rs 77 in early trade.

Tata Steel rose 1.96% to Rs 456 after the company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1035.87 crore in Q4 March 2014 as against net loss of Rs 6528.51 crore in Q4 March 2013. The stock was volatile. The stock hit 52-week high of Rs 468 in intraday trade. The stock hit low of Rs 451.10 in intraday trade. The result was announced after market hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014.

Tata Steel's total income from operations rose 22.44% to Rs 42428.05 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013.

Tata Steel reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 3594.89 crore in the year ended 31 March 2014 (FY 2014) as against net loss of Rs 7057.62 crore in the year ended 31 March 2013 (FY 2013). Total income from operations rose 10.31% to Rs 148613.55 crore in FY 2014 over FY 2013.

Tata Group steel deliveries in the fiscal year ended March 2014 (FY 2014) increased to 26.56 million tonnes from 24.13 million tonnes in FY 2013. Deliveries in Q4 March 2014 (Q4 2014) increased to 7.62 million tonnes compared to 6.38 million tonnes in Q3 December 2013 (Q3 2014) and 6.56 million tonnes in Q4 March 2013 (Q4 2013).

Group consolidated turnover in FY 2014 was Rs 148614 crore versus Rs 134712 crore in FY 2013. Q4 2014 turnover increased to Rs 42428 crore from Rs 36736 crore in Q3 2014 and Rs 34650 crore in Q4 2013.

FY 2014 Group EBITDA was Rs 16377 crore compared to Rs 12654 crore in FY 2013, implying an improvement of 29%. Q4 2014 EBITDA increased significantly to Rs 4917 crore from Rs 3921 crore in Q3 2014 and Rs 4368 crore in Q4 2013.

Group Profit after Tax (after minority interest and share of profit of associates) in FY 2014 swung to Rs 3595 crore versus the loss of Rs 7058 crore in FY 2013. FY 2014 results included exceptional charges of Rs 28 crore compared to the charges of Rs 7390 crore in FY 2013. Profit after tax in Q4 2014 doubled to Rs 1036 crore compared to Rs 503 crore in Q3 2014 and was a significant improvement over the loss of Rs 6529 crore in Q4 2013. Q4 2014 results were affected by exceptional charges of Rs 46 crore while the exceptional charges for Q4 2013 were Rs 7413 crore.

The improved and steady performance of operations across geographies, despite weak market conditions, led to this significantly improved Group performance, the company said in a statement.

Cash and cash equivalents as on 31 March 2014 were Rs 11373 crore and net debt was Rs 67326 crore.

Tata Steel said that the actuarial gains and losses on funds for employee benefits (pension plans) of Tata Steel Europe for the period from 1 April 2008 have been accounted in "Reserves and Surplus" in the consolidated financial statements in accordance with IFRS/IND AS principles and as permitted by Accounting Standard 21. Had the company recognised changes in actuarial valuations of pension plans of Tata Steel Europe in the statement of profit and loss, the consolidated profit after taxes, minority interest and share of profit of associates for the year ended 31 March 2014 would have been lower by Rs 628.23 crore (Rs 247.90 crore for the quarter) and the consolidated loss after taxes, minority interest and share of profit of associates for the year ended 31 March 2013 would have been higher by Rs 317.26 crore (lower by Rs 1504.80 crore for the quarter), Tata Steel said.

Tata Steel's board of directors at its meeting held on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, recommended a dividend of Rs 10 per share for FY 2014.

Among other metal and mining stocks, Sesa Sterlite (down 1.9%), Hindustan Copper (down 2.9%), Hindustan Zinc (down 1.41%), and Hindalco Industries (down 2.62%) declined.

NMDC fell 3.64% to Rs 153.40, with the stock reversing direction after hitting 52-week high of Rs 161 in early trade.

National Aluminum Company (Nalco) surged 5.51% to Rs 45 after hitting 52-week high of Rs 45.60 in intraday trade. National Aluminium Company after trading hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, said that in accordance with the approval given by Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on 25 October 2012, the Government of India is offering up to 1.56 crore equity shares of face value of Rs 5 of the company to the eligible employees of the company at a discounted price Rs 38 per equity share (5% discount to the cut-off price of Rs 40 discovered in the Offer for Sale of equity shares of Nalco carried out by the Government of India on 15 March 2013). The Dept. of Disinvestment, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India vide a letter dated 25 March 2014 has advised Nalco to complete the formalities for issue of shares to the eligible employees latest by 31 May 2014.

In this connection, action has been taken by Nalco for sale of equity shares to the eligible employees of the company by the Govt. of India. The offer will remain open from 15 May 2014 to 22 May 2014 (both days inclusive), Nalco said in a statement.

Wipro fell 1.37% to Rs 517, with the stock reversing initial gains triggered by the company securing 7-year deal from UK-based Xoserve. The stock hit high of Rs 528 and low of Rs 513.05. Wipro announced on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, that it has won a seven-year engagement with Xoserve, an organization which is an integral part of the gas distribution and transmission market in Britain.

The contract is part of the UK Link Programme which will involve the replacement of Xoserve's two decade old legacy UK Link suite of applications by best-in-class enterprise applications with more contemporary technologies. UK Link is a suite of highly complex information and technology systems, managed by Xoserve on behalf of the UK Gas Industry that ensure the smooth running of Britain's competitive gas market. The new platform will enable Xoserve to meet the expected demand growth generated by the roll-out of Smart Meters in the United Kingdom as well as enable Xoserve to be more responsive to changes in the gas market.

Tech Mahindra edged lower in choppy trade after the company announced weak Q4 March 2014 results after trading hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014. The stock shed 0.41% at Rs 1,830.55. The stock hit high of Rs 1,873 and low of Rs 1,813.90 in intraday trade. The company's consolidated net profit declined 39.18% to Rs 614.20 crore on 3.25% growth in revenue from services to Rs 5058.10 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q3 December 2013.

Tech Mahindra's operating profit declined 5.67% to Rs 1071.80 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q3 December 2013.

Tech Mahindra's profit after tax (PAT) surged 54.9% to Rs 3029 crore on 31.4% growth in revenue to Rs 18831 crore in the year ended 31 March 2014 (FY 2014) over the year ended 31 March 2013 (FY 2013).

EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization) rose 36.6% to Rs 4184 crore in FY 2014 over FY 2013.

Tech Mahindra said that the results for the quarter and year ended 31 March 2014 include the results of merged entities giving effect to the scheme, while the results of the corresponding periods of the previous years and the previous year ended 31 March 2013 do not include the results of the merged entities and hence the same are not comparable.

The company's debt as of 31 March 2014 stood at Rs 363 crore. The company said it repaid Rs 796 crore in FY 2014. Cash and cash equivalent stood at Rs 3599 crore as of 31 March 2014. Active client count stood at 629 as against 516 in FY 2013, the company said in a statement.

Auto stocks were mixed. Ashok Leyland fell 0.59%. Hero MotoCorp shed 0.03%. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) (up 1.09%) and TVS Motor Company (up 2.04%) gained.

Maruti Suzuki India rose 1.65% to Rs 2,121 after hitting record high of Rs 2,124 in intraday trade.

Tata Motors edged lower in choppy trade after the company said its group's global wholesales, including Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), fell 7.65% to 75,026 units in April 2014 over April 2013. The stock was off 0.67% at Rs 439.45. The stock hit high of Rs 448.75 and low of Rs 437.10. Global wholesales for JLR rose 39% to 40,137 vehicles in April 2014 over April 2013.

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on Monday, 12 May 2014, reported 30% increase in global sales at 37,171 units in April 2014 over April 2013.

Bajaj Auto declined 4.19% after the company reported weak Q4 results. The company's net profit fell 0.24% to Rs 763.93 crore on 2.54% rise in total income to Rs 5117.10 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The result was announced during market hours. Operating earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin stood at 20.6% in Q4 March 2014 compared with 18.9% in Q4 March 2013.

Bajaj Auto's net profit rose 6.56% to Rs 3243.32 crore on 0.30% increase in total income to Rs 20855.92 crore in the year ended March 2014 over the year ended March 2013.

Operating EBITDA margin stood at 21.5% in the year ended March 2014 compared with 19.1% in the year ended March 2013.

On a consolidated basis, net profit rose 7.90% to Rs 3380.28 crore in the year ended March 2014 over the year ended March 2013. Sales were almost flat at Rs 20840.10 crore in the year ended March 2014 over the year ended March 2013.

Cash and cash equivalents as on 31 March 2014 stood at Rs 7759 crore as against Rs 5706 crore as on 1 April 2013.

Apollo Tyres jumped 5.88% to Rs 177.30 after consolidated net profit jumped 98.62% to Rs 281.62 crore on 5.39% growth in total income to Rs 3247.88 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The result was announced during market hours today, 15 May 2014. The stock hit a record high of Rs 183 in intraday trade today, 15 May 2014.

Capital goods stocks declined. ABB (India) (down 0.52%), BEML (down 2.24%), L&T (down 1.31%), Punj Lloyd (down 2.17%) and Thermax (down 2.92%) declined. Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) rose 0.9%.

Siemens rose 3.38% to Rs 818.60. The stock hit a 52-week high of Rs 823.85 in intraday trade today, 15 May 2014.

Realty stocks declined. Indiabulls Real Estate (down 5.09%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (down 2.54%), D B Realty (down 3.69%), Unitech (down 3.71%), and Parsvnath Developers (down 2.75%) declined. Oberoi Realty gained 2.31%.

Realty major DLF slipped 0.97% to Rs 159 in volatile trade. The stock hit high of Rs 169 and low of Rs 158.15.

Bank of India declined 3.37% after net profit fell 26.31% to Rs 557.51 crore on 21.68% increase in total income to Rs 11274.09 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The result was announced during trading hours today, 15 May 2014.

Bank of India's net profit fell 0.73% to Rs 2729.27 crore on 18.30% increase in total income to Rs 42201.94 crore in the year ended March 2014 over the year ended March 2013.

Bank of India's ratio of net non-performing assets (NPAs) to net advances stood at 2% as on 31 March 2014, compared with 1.75% as on 31 December 2013 and 2.06% as on 31 March 2013.

The bank's ratio of gross NPAs to gross advances stood at 3.15% as on 31 March 2014, compared with 2.81% as on 31 December 2013 and 2.99% as on 31 March 2013.

Provisions and contingencies rose 2.43% to Rs 1547.27 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The provisioning coverage ratio as on 31 March 2014 stood at 58.68%.

The bank's Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) as per Basel III norms stood at 9.97% as on 31 March 2014, compared with 10.84% as on 31 December 2013.

Titan Company rose 3.69% to Rs 315 after hitting record high of Rs 319.40 in intraday trade.

Nilkamal spurted 10.15% after net profit surged 194.99% to Rs 14.13 crore on 5.17% rise in net sales to Rs 461.05 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The result was announced after market hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014. Nilkamal's net profit rose 28.34% to Rs 40.03 crore on 2.86% rise in net sales to Rs 1645.95 crore in the year ended March 2014 over the year ended March 2013.

Shakti Pumps India surged 13.54% after net profit jumped 99.4% to Rs 9.71 crore on 90.6% increase in net sales to Rs 98.14 crore in Q4 March 2014 over Q4 March 2013. The Q4 result was announced after market hours on Wednesday, 14 May 2014.

On a consolidated basis, Shakti Pumps India's net profit rose 48.5% to Rs 24.98 crore on 39.9% increase in net sales to Rs 292.09 crore in the year ended 31 March 2014 over the year ended 31 March 2013.

In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar on signs the Lok Sabha election results due tomorrow, 16 May 2014, will show a clear winner. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 59.28, compared with its close of 59.66/67 on Tuesday, 13 May 2014. The foreign exchange market was closed on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, on account of a bank holiday.

The annual rate of inflation based on monthly wholesale price index (WPI) eased to 5.2% for the month of April 2014 from 5.7% in March 2014, helped by a decline in fuel prices, data released by the government today, 15 May 2014, showed. Simultaneously, the government revised upwards the rate of WPI inflation for February 2014 to 5.03%, from 4.68% reported on 14 March 2014.
