Shares of 14 sugar companies rose by 1.49% to 10% at 14:05 IST on BSE on expectations of higher demand during the summer season from bulk consumers such as ice-cream makers in the spot market.
Upper Ganges Sugar (up 10%), Dhampur Sugar Mills (up 8.38%), Rana Sugars (up 8.15%), Bajaj Hindusthan (up 5.68%), Balrampur Chini Mills (up 5.29%), Sakthi Sugars (up 5.26%), Oudh Sugar Mills (up 4.88%), Simbhaoli Sugar Mills (up 4.74%), KCP Sugar & Industries Corporation (up 4.68%), Dwarikesh Sugar Industries (up 3.86%), EID Parry (India) (up 3.61%), Triveni Engineering & Industries (up 2.52%), Shree Renuka Sugars (up 2.09%) and Eastern Sugar & Industries (up 1.49%), edged higher.
The S&P BSE Sensex was down 17.43 points, or 0.08% at 22,368.84.
At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in April advanced by Rs 53, or 1.69% to Rs 3,198 per quintal. Sugar for delivery in May rose by Rs 41, or 1.29% to Rs 3,209 per quintal.
