Weak market breadth

Weakness persisted on the bourses in early afternoon trade. At 12:19 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 302.78 points or 0.79% at 37,973.85. The Nifty 50 index was down 84.15 points or 0.73% at 11,413.75. Telecom stocks fell. Shares of Neogen Chemicals surged on debut.

The Sensex was trading below the psychological 38,000 level after moving above and below that level in intraday trade. Key indices edged lower in early trade on negative Asian stocks. Indices extended fall in morning trade. Stocks gyrated in negative zone in mid-morning trade.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down 0.6%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 0.82%.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On the BSE, 620 shares rose and 1571 shares fell. A total of 112 shares were unchanged.

Telecom stocks fell. Vodafone Idea (down 7.12%), Bharti Airtel (down 0.26%), MTNL (down 1.35%) and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (down 1.7%) fell. Reliance Communications (up 4.88%) rose.

Shares of Bharti Infratel rose 0.58%. Bharti Infratel is a provider of tower and related infrastructure and is a unit of Bharti Airtel.

Shares of Neogen Chemicals were trading at Rs 263.55, a premium of 22.58% over the initial public offer price of Rs 215. The stock debuted at Rs 251, a premium of 16.74% to the initial public offer (IPO) price. So far the stock hit a high of Rs 263.55 and low of Rs 250.10. On BSE, so far 2.81 lakh shares were traded on the counter.

Overseas, Asian equities tracked Wall Street's slide on Wednesday as the latest developments in the US-China trade conflict fanned fresh fears about global growth.

U.S. stocks dropped sharply Tuesday, building on the previous day's decline after U.S. officials confirmed that tariffs on imported goods from China could be raised by the end of the week.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer reportedly said Monday that the Trump administration will increase tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods early Friday from 10% to 25%.
